Compassionate Care in India
The Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ began their ministry in India in 1970, first planting roots in Dhani, Indore, and across Madhya Pradesh. Today, the Sisters are present throughout the northern and southern regions of India, accompanying the poor, the sick, and the vulnerable through ministries of health care, education, pastoral outreach, and social services.
One of the most powerful expressions of this ministry is the Maria Sahan Destitute Home, founded in 2003. Here, women experiencing homelessness and hardship find not only safe shelter, but holistic care in a compassionate and faith-filled environment. Residents receive nutritious meals, daily prayer, physical therapy, emotional support, and basic health screenings and medications. Each person is treated with dignity, honoring their unique story and journey.
The ministry also serves as a formation site for young women discerning healthcare vocations. These volunteers assist residents with personal care, share conversation and joy through music and activities, and develop skills they carry into future work serving the elderly and vulnerable.
While the needs are great, so is the love that surrounds each woman who walks through the doors of Maria Sahan. With increased support, this home can grow its outreach, improve facilities, and ensure that more women are welcomed with the same compassion that Saint Katharina once showed to those on the margins.
