Showing Up with Purpose
The PHJC Volunteer Program brings compassionate individuals together to serve those who are often overlooked. Rooted in the mission of the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ, the Volunteer Program creates meaningful opportunities for volunteers to respond where the need is great, and the resources are few.

In Marshall County, Indiana, volunteers are a steady presence for families experiencing housing insecurity. Many of these families live in aging motels with limited access to food, transportation, and necessities. Volunteers visit regularly, offering warm meals, groceries, and essential supplies. Alongside food and household items, volunteers also help meet urgent needs such as utility bills, car repairs, and transportation.

Volunteers continue to make a powerful impact at Sojourner Truth House in Gary, Indiana. They work wherever they are needed, including stocking shelves in the food pantry, sorting donations in the clothes closet, helping with administrative tasks, and supporting staff with daily operations. Their presence ensures that services run smoothly, and clients are treated with dignity and care.

The program also extends well beyond local outreach. PHJC Volunteers have served in Mexico, Kenya, and across the United States, working alongside Sisters and other PHJC ministries in a spirit of shared mission. Whether teaching English, organizing outreach events, or assisting in community gardens, volunteers bring their time, skills, and presence to support both immediate and long-term needs.

The heart of the program is in its relationships. Volunteers do more than deliver resources. They listen. They show up. They help create moments of dignity and connection for those who may feel unseen or forgotten. Whether celebrating holidays or simply offering support in the everyday, the program brings joy, relief, and the reassurance that someone cares.

Each act of service is grounded in a simple but powerful belief: that presence matters. Through the PHJC Volunteer Program, people of all backgrounds are invited to walk with others in their time of need. Together, they help heal what is broken, nourish what is hungry, and create a compassionate community where all are welcome.

Every act of giving echoes our mission. When you support the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ, you join a legacy of compassion, service, and justice. Your generosity sustains ministries that uplift the most vulnerable in communities near and far.
