Walking with the Vulnerable in Mexico
In the city of Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz, the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ serve through “Las Obras de Catalina” (The Works of Katherina), a civil association named in honor of Saint Katharina Kasper. Through three core ministries, the Sisters and their collaborators respond with compassion to those facing illness, hunger, poverty, and abandonment.

Casa Catalina began as a ministry providing care and support for patients living with HIV or AIDS. As needs evolved, so did the mission. Today, Casa Catalina extends its reach to people facing chronic illnesses such as cardiovascular disease, as well as survivors of migration trauma, homelessness, and violence. Many of those served have no family support and no means to access even basic medical care. The ministry offers dignity, accompaniment, and a path toward healing.

The Guadalupana Children’s Soup Kitchen nourishes both body and soul. Children, nursing mothers, and the elderly gather daily for warm meals, care, and community. Social workers assess each family’s broader needs to provide referrals and support services. Beyond food, the kitchen fosters a safe space where children can play, learn values, and grow in a spirit of joy and hope.

Posada de Belén serves as a home away from home for families with loved ones in nearby hospitals. Many travel long distances and have nowhere to stay while their relatives receive care. The Sisters offer meals, lodging, and pastoral support. Social workers help families navigate complex medical systems and paperwork. More than 8,000 people receive care through Posada de Belén each year.

These ministries uphold the dignity of every person and reflect the compassionate love at the heart of our faith. Through your generosity, you become part of this response, walking with those the world too often overlooks.

Every act of giving echoes our mission. When you support the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ, you join a legacy of compassion, service, and justice. Your generosity sustains ministries that uplift the most vulnerable in communities near and far.
