May 13, 1920 - June 28, 2007

Sister Celeste Sass, PHJC passed away on June 28, 2007 at the Catherine Kasper Home, Donaldson, Indiana, She was born Mildred Sass to Edward and Walburga Sass on May 13, 1920 in Quincy, Illinois and was the seventh of nine children. She entered the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ community and professed her first vows on June 25, 1944.

Sister Celeste cared for people throughout her life. She ministered in childcare at Angel Guardian Orphanage, Chicago; St. Vincent Villa, Fort Wayne, Indiana; and St. John’s, Belleville, Illinois. She also ministered in elderly care, parish ministry, food service and as a housekeeper, seamstress and receptionist in various places. Sister Celeste retired to the Catherine Kasper Home in 1994.

In Memory of Olive Szostek, Associate

Olive Szostek, East Three Associate, passed away on May 21, 2007 in hospice care in Munster, Indiana. She was 88 years old. Olive has been an Associate since 1984 and was recognized for her 20th anniversary in 2004. Olive served as a volunteer in pastoral ministry at St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart for seventeen years, ending in 1973. She was an assistant to Sister Bertram Boeving for those years. Olive also was a Eucharistic minister at the medical center.

Sister Mary Erwin

Sr. Mary Erwin Huelskamp, PHJC passed away on May 21, 2007 at the Catherine Kasper Home,, Donaldson, Indiana. She was born Frieda Huelskamp to Herman and Catherine Huelskamp on September 10, 1914 in Breese Illinois.. She entered the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ community and professed her first vows on June 25, 1933.

Sister Mary Erwin ministered in education for 56 years. In Indiana, she taught at St. Joseph and St. Monica, Mishawaka; St. Mary, East Chicago; and Ancilla High School and College, Donaldson. In Illinois she taught at St. Henry, Angel Guardian Orphanage and St. Augustine, Chicago; and St. Boniface, Germantown. She retired to the Catherine Kasper Home in 1997.

On May 1, 2007, West Associate Shirley Tarnowski passed away. Shirley was 74 years old and lived in Hammond. Shirley had been seriously ill for some time and was under the care of Hospice.

Shirley is survived by a sister and a sister-in-law; six nephews and three nieces; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. Shirley had been a member of St. Catherine of Siena Church for 50 years where she also served eight years as secretary for the church.

Shirley’s first commitment as a PHJC Associate was on April 13, 1992. She is being recognized posthumously this summer for fifteen years as an Associate.

In Memory of Barbara Rogers, Associate

On April 22, 2007, East One Associate Barbara Rogers passed away. She was 73 years old. She had been struggling with illness and was in the care of Hospice in her home. She was surrounded by her loving family at home at the time of her death.

Barbara is survived by her husband of 52 years, Richard. They have two sons, Greg and Joe, and two daughters, Beth and Janet. Barbara is also survived by eleven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Barbara was a member of Queen of Angels parish. Her Mass of Christian Burial was held in the church on April 26.

Barbara made her first commitment as an Associate of the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ on May 19, 2001 in the hospital chapel of St. Joseph Hospital, Fort Wayne. She was recognized in 2006 for her fifth anniversary as an Associate.

In Memory of Mary Quackenbush, Associate

East One Associate, Mary Quackenbush, passed away on February 1, 2007. She was 90 years old. Mary had been an Associate for sixteen years. In March of 2003, she was featured with several other Associates and Sisters in Ministry Moments at the Mission Group Meetings.

Mary is survived by four sons, one daughter, six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and two brothers. She was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Yoder, Indiana. Her Mass of Christian Burial was on February
