175 Years of the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ

For 175 years, women inspired by the Gospel and the charism of Saint Katharina Kasper have served with humility, attentiveness, and compassion across the world. From a small village in Germany to communities on five continents, in nine countries the Spirit continues to move us toward those most in need. This anniversary is not only a remembrance of the past. It is an invitation to walk with us into the future.

We are so very grateful for the incredible support and generosity from all who made our 175th anniversary celebration such a memorable and joyful event!

We thank every department and person who contributed to the day in any way! We appreciate all your hard work, efforts, dedication, and creativity! Special thanks to the planning committee for their tireless efforts, planning, and coordination. Everyone’s presence and kindnesses made this 175th milestone celebration truly unforgettable! The Holy Spirit and Saint Katharina Kasper were certainly present among us!!!

As the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ celebrate 175 years of ministry, these original works of art invite you into a shared story that began in Germany in 1851 and now spans five continents. Created by Sisters from each of our international Units, every poster reflects the unique culture, history, and spirit of its people while expressing the one charism that unites us all.

More than an exhibit, this collection is a prayerful witness to the many ways God’s Spirit has moved through generations of Sisters in service to those most vulnerable. As you explore each piece, we invite you to see not only where we have been, but also the hope that continues to guide us forward, together, moved by God’s Spirit.

OUR MISSION TODAY

The Spirit that moved our foundress in 1851 continues to guide our mission in the present moment. Today, the Poor Handmaids serve through education, health care, spiritual formation, ecological stewardship, and social outreach.

Grounded in prayer and community, we seek to be a presence of hope in a world longing for justice, healing, and peace.
