August 12, 1917 - August 29, 2009

Sister Sharon Schaefer, PHJC passed away on August 29, 2009 at the Catherine Kasper Home, Donaldson, Indiana. She was born Ruth Marie Schaefer to Leo and Amelia (Bushard) Schaefer on August 12, 1917 in Nicollet, Minnesota. She entered the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ community and professed her first vows on June 25, 1945.

From 1944 to 1988, Sister Sharon ministered at various hospitals in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Indiana and Illinois as a surgical/operating room supervisor, or as an assistant director of nursing and director of nursing. She also served as a faculty member at St. Elizabeth School of Nursing in Chicago, Illinois. After ministering as a nurse, she began working in Cairo, Illinois at Day Star Outreach Program and with senior citizens at the Alexander Housing. She retired to the Catherine Kasper Home in 1996.
