Ancilla Softball Delivers Gifts and Socks to the Homeless
For the second straight year, the Ancilla College softball team put their Christmas spirit to work by helping the homeless.
The Chargers kept up their tradition by allowing fans to donate socks at all home softball games in the fall and spring, in place of paying admission. Over 200 pair of socks were collected and donated to Hope Rescue Mission in South Bend. The team went one step further this year.
Valparaiso University Chorale to Perform
The Valparaiso University Chorale, one of the top Lutheran choirs in the United States, will be coming to Donaldson on Saturday February 23, 2013. The concert will take place at the Ancilla Domini Chapel, PHJC Ministry Center in Donaldson, IN at 7:00 pm. ET. Admission to the concert is free however a free-will offering will be accepted.
The Chorale will perform a variety of sacred and secular music, featuring Frank Ticheli’s ethereal “There Will Be Rest,” Daniel Gawthrop’s robust “Sing a Mighty Song,” and classical works from Schütz and Bach in celebration of the Chorale’s upcoming performance of Mass in B Minor at Valparaiso University.
The Saint John's Bible
Something remarkable happened at Saint John's Abbey and University in Collegeville, MN in 1998. The first handwritten, hand-illuminated Bible in 500 years was commissioned to be completed. A team of artists and scholars, brought together by renowned calligrapher Donald Jackson, combined the ancient techniques of calligraphy and illumination with an ecumenical Christian approach to the Bible rooted in Benedictine spirituality. The result is a living document and a monumental achievement that captures the beauty and tradition of centuries of liturgy that will carry it into the future.
Two presentations will be held at The Center At Donaldson, and sponsored by the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ.
Sister Kate Kuenstler to hold Teleconference
Sister Kate Kuenstler, PHJC will be presenting a teleconference titled “Finding Your Voice” on February 12, 2013 for Future Church. You can choose to participate either at 12:30-2:00 p.m. EST or 8:30-10:00 p.m. EST. The main theme of the presentation will be the rights and obligations of the laity as found in Book 2 of Canon Law. After the presentation, participants will have a lively discussion of how Canon Law can empower and guide our actions as Catholics.
Ancilla College Lowers Tuition Costs
At a time when most universities and colleges in Indiana have increased tuition and fees, Ancilla College is dramatically lowering tuition while also offering more degree choices at its campus near Plymouth.
In a meeting Monday, the college board of trustees voted to approve a 4 percent across-the-board tuition reduction for the 2013–2014 year. The move lowers tuition at what is already the state’s least expensive private college. The new tuition lowers the cost of full-time enrollment at the school to $6,500 per semester, for students enrolling in 15 credit hours for the semester.
“This is a strategic move on our part,” said Ancilla’s president Ron May. “While most colleges and universities have raised their tuition each year over the past decade Ancilla is moving to reduce the cost of higher education.”
Valparaiso University Chorale Performed in Ancilla Chapel
The Valparaiso University Chorale performed a program in the Ancilla Domini Chapel on February 23, 2013.
The 48-voice ensemble was conducted by Dr. Christopher M. Cock. Dr. Cock holds the Phyllis and Richard Duesenberg chair of Lutheran music at VU. He is also director of the Bach Institute at Valparaiso University.
Health Information Technology Award to Fort Wayne Area Collaboration
The Association of Clinicians for the Underserved awarded to the St. Joseph Community Health Foundation together with its key partners, Parkview Health Systems and the Fort Wayne-Allen County Department of Health their Health Information Technology Award. The Award to was presented to Project Connect staff and partners at their conference March 7 in Poughkeepsie, NY for an outstanding project in the Community Agency category. Project Connect innovatively uses videoconferencing, phone and fax to provide medical interpretation and health navigation for area medical providers and their Burmese patients.
PHJC Ministry Center Changes Name
The Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ Ministry Center will now be called The Center at Donaldson. The Poor Handmaid Leadership decided to simplify the name that refers to all of their ministries located in Donaldson.
Ninety years ago the Poor Handmaids moved from Fort Wayne to Donaldson and built a new Motherhouse. Over the years, a variety of ministries developed at and from the Motherhouse offering intergenerational living and learning opportunities.
International Water Day
Have you ever heard of water poverty? The lack of adequate sanitation and clean freshwater is one of the main factors which contributes to lack of universal socio-economic development and poverty reduction throughout our world. All life must have water.
This Friday, March 22, is International Water Day. It offers an occasion to focus attention on the importance of freshwater and advocacy for the sustainable management of freshwater resources, an issue near and dear to the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ American Province.

We hope you find it vibrant and informative. Word Gathering has been keeping our friends and families informed about the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ and their ministries since the fall of 1978 when the first issue was printed. At that time the format was a one sheet, folded tabloid-size newsletter and Sister Mary Baird was the editor.
