East Three Associate Berniece (Bea) Simshauser passed away in December 2008 following an extended illness. Berniece is survived by her husband, Associate Clarence Simshauser. They were married on Valentine’s Day in 1939 and resided in Winamac, Indiana. Bea was 90 years old.

Bea is also survived by a daughter and a son; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a sister. She was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church and the Christian Mothers in Winamac.

Bea made her first Commitment as an Associate in 1987. In 2007, at Gathering VIII, she was recognized for her 20th Anniversary in the Associate Community. Clarence and Bea participated in many Associate gatherings at the Motherhouse over the years. They also participated in the Senior Summer Program at Donaldson in the past.

A Memorial Service was held for Bea in January 2009

Sister Charlette Hess, PHJC passed away on November 10, 2009 at the Catherine Kasper Home, Donaldson, Indiana. She was born Ann Marie Hess to Nicholas and Elisabeth (Schilling) Hess on September 12, 1922 in Ruma, Illinois. She entered the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ community and professed her first vows on June 25, 1945.

Sister Charlette, ministered in dietary services for 47 years in the Dioceses of Fort Wayne/South Bend, Indiana; Springfield, Illinois; Archdiocese of Chicago; New Ulm, Minnesota; and Belleville, Illinois. She also served at the Hincke Home in Belleville, as laundress from 1991-1998. Sister Charlette retired to the Catherine Kasper Home in 1998.

In Memory of Sister Sharon Schaefer, PHJC

Sister Sharon Schaefer, PHJC passed away on August 29, 2009 at the Catherine Kasper Home, Donaldson, Indiana. She was born Ruth Marie Schaefer to Leo and Amelia (Bushard) Schaefer on August 12, 1917 in Nicollet, Minnesota. She entered the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ community and professed her first vows on June 25, 1945.

From 1944 to 1988, Sister Sharon ministered at various hospitals in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Indiana and Illinois as a surgical/operating room supervisor, or as an assistant director of nursing and director of nursing. She also served as a faculty member at St. Elizabeth School of Nursing in Chicago, Illinois. After ministering as a nurse, she began working in Cairo, Illinois at Day Star Outreach Program and with senior citizens at the Alexander Housing. She retired to the Catherine Kasper Home in 1996.

Sister Lorine

November 10, 1922 - May 31, 2009

Sister Lorine Huelskamp, PHJC passed away on May 31, 2009 at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Plymouth, Indiana. She was born Florence Huelskamp to Herman and Catherine (Petermeier) Huelskamp on November 10, 1922 in Breese, Illinois. She entered the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ community and professed her first vows on June 25, 1944.

Sister Lorine ministered in education from 1944 to 1986 at various schools in Indiana and Illinois. In 1986 she became a Pastoral Minister and served in this ministry until 1998 when she moved to Donaldson to work in the PHJC Business Office. Since 2004 she joyfully served the PHJC community.

Her sister, Sister David Huelskamp, PHJC and niece, Sister Julia Huelskamp, PHJC currently reside at the Catherine Kasper Home in Donaldson.

Sister Rosemary Wagner, PHJC passed away on May 21, 2009 at the Catherine Kasper Home, Donaldson, Indiana. She was born Johanna Wagner to Joseph and Anna (Grunauer) Wagner in December 1916 in Chicago, Illinois. She entered the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ community and professed her first vows on June 25, 1936.

Sister Rosemary ministered in education from 1935 to 1996 at various schools in Indiana and Illinois. Though she retired to the Catherine Kasper Home in 1996, she continued to be active and was a “Thank You Sister,” hand writing thank you notes to our donors.

In Memory of Marie Kuhn, Associate

On September 17, Quincy Associate Marie Kuhn passed away in St. Vincent’s Home where she had been a resident for a number of years. She was 96 years old.

Marie was the organist at St. John the Baptist parish for 45 years, retiring in 2000. She also was a graduate of St. John Grade School in her youth, and was a life-long member of the parish. In her adulthood she was a member of St. John’s Leisure Club and St.Vincent’s Home Auxiliary.

Marie is survived by her daughters Marjorie Steinkamp, Janet Allison, Barbara St. Marie; her sister-in-law, Sister Florence Kuhn, PHJC; two brothers; 15 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Marie made her First Commitment to the Associate Community in 1993, and was recognized in 2008 on her 15th anniversary. The Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church in Quincy, IL on October 1, 2008.
